Air Conditioning Evaporator

Air Conditioning Evaporator

An air conditioning evaporator is a heat exchanger that absorbs heat from the air passing through the evaporator fins. Cold refrigerant gas flows through the evaporator, cooling the surrounding air, which then blows through your dashboard’s vents.

A failed or malfunctioning air conditioning evaporator will keep the air conditioning system from cooling the cabin of your vehicle. In some cases, you may notice abnormal odors when the heating or air conditioning system is running.

Air conditioning evaporator troubleshooting

  • A leaking air conditioning evaporator is difficult to diagnose since it is located under the dashboard.
  • You may need to remove the dashboard to access and diagnose the air conditioning evaporator. A leaking evaporator must be replaced.
  • Since your accumulator or receiver-drier acts as a debris and moisture filter, it must be replaced along with a bad air conditioning evaporator to keep the system clean.
