Steering Rack Bushings

Steering Rack Bushings

A steering rack bushing is used to secure a steering rack to a vehicle. By design, it is a rubber or polyurethane cylinder with a metal sleeve that goes through it along the centerline. Thanks to this specific design, a steering rack bushing serves two important purposes at the same time, keeping the steering rack attached to the vehicle and dampening vibration caused by the vehicle and its systems.

A worn-out or damaged steering rack bushing can turn into a source of problems with the steering system. The most common problems you may face are clunking and jerking noises when cornering or going over bumps, and an excessive free play of the steering wheel.

Steering rack bushing replacement

  • We recommend you to inspect steering rack bushings before every wheel alignment.
  • If steering bushings are replaced, a four-wheel alignment is a must-have procedure.
